Saga Kaelis-Vara / Our Archipelago
Kaelis-Vara is a volcanic archipelago situated in the misty northern seas. Formed by ancient basalt eruptions, the city spans three main islands—Kaelishöfn, Varðey, and Vitahöfði—separated by deep, cold fjords and connected by geothermal valleys. Our climate is maritime and temperate, characterized by crisp, foggy mornings, cool summers, and mild, geothermal-warmed winters.
For centuries, the inhabitants relied on wooden rowing boats and dangerous cliffside paths to trade fish and basalt stone. The industrial revolution brought steam-powered ferries, but it was the discovery of deep geothermal steam reservoirs in the early 20th century that transformed Kaelis-Vara into a modern marvel of engineering and sustainable urban planning.
Stofnun KVS / The Transit Authority
Kaelis-Vara Samgöngustofa (KVS) was founded on May 12, 1924, following the completion of the Great Basalt Bridge. This monumental structure allowed the first electric tramway to cross the harbor, uniting the fishing docks of Kaelishöfn with the growing city center of Miðbær.
From our very first tram to today's high-speed geothermal metro system, KVS has spoken to the public with a voice of reliability, transparency, and civic pride. We believe that public transit is not just a utility, but the lifeblood of our community. Today, our entire network is 100% carbon-neutral, powered entirely by the archipelago's abundant geothermal steam and tidal energy.

Lost something on our Metro, Tram, or Ferry? Don't worry. KVS operates a centralized lost property office at our headquarters. Over 85% of lost items are successfully reunited with their owners.

All items found on vehicles or platforms are logged and transferred to our central office within 24 hours. We will match your enquiry and notify you.
Collect your item from our HQ at Fiskisund 12. Please bring a valid photo ID. Found items are held securely for up to 90 calendar days.
