About KITA

Our Story

Founded in 814 AD by Kalurian seafarers, the island city grew from a fishing settlement into a bustling port. The transit authority was established in 1962 to unify the patchwork of private bus, tram, and ferry operators that had served the island since the early 1900s.

Today, Kaluri Island Transit Authority operates 5 transit lines — metro, tram, ferry, and funicular — carrying over 45 million passengers annually across 342,000 residents and visitors.

Our mission is simple: make public transit the easiest, most reliable way to move around Kaluri. Every timetable, every fare, every announcement is designed with our passengers in mind.

Our Network

The Kaluri network spans the entire island, from the volcanic heights of Skólavarðsfell to the sheltered harbours of the south shore. Whether you're commuting to work in Sentrala, exploring the galleries of Lundagarður, or catching the last ferry to Sunstrand, KITA gets you there.

Accessibility

All metro and tram stations have step-free access. Ferry terminals have level boarding at low tide. The funicular is fully wheelchair-accessible. Audio announcements are available in Kalurian and English on all metro and tram services.

Visual and audio information is provided in both Kalurian and English at all stations. Real-time departure information is available on digital displays and through the KITA mobile app.

Environmental Commitment

KITA is committed to reducing Kaluri Island's carbon footprint. Our metro and tram fleet runs on 100% renewable electricity generated from the island's geothermal plants. Ferry vessels were converted to hybrid electric propulsion in 2024, reducing emissions by 60%.

We aim to achieve zero-emission operations across all lines by 2030.

Governance

Kaluri Island Transit Authority is a statutory body established by the Kaluri Island Transit Act of 1962. We are governed by a board of seven directors appointed by the Island Council, with two passenger representatives elected by annual ballot.
