Veyra occupies five inhabited islands in the Aru Sea, where an ancient volcanic rim shelters a deep natural harbour. Warm currents keep winters mild; summer trade winds clear the humid afternoons. Limestone houses step up the dark slopes, while shipyards, salt gardens and glass workshops line the protected sound.

The city was chartered in 1741 after three harbour villages agreed to share water, roads and the cliff market. Veyri—the compact, vowel-rich language still spoken at home and in public life—grew from the sailors’ speech of those villages. Every VTA sign leads with Veyri and follows with English, the trade language of the archipelago.

Today, 418,000 people call Veyra home. The main island holds the civic centre and tramways; four smaller islands depend on frequent, all-weather ferries. The 286-metre Oru ridge is linked to the old city by Oru Sela / the Caldera Funicular.
