Our history

A century of moving Velkara

The Velkara Transit Authority was established on 4 June 1923 by the Velmori Transport Act 1922, after four years of construction work that had begun in 1918. The first line to open was the original Cordage Line tram, on 14 May 1924, between Old Harbor and Council Square.

The metro followed in 1951 with the Spire Line, then extended in stages until the Quay Line through-cross was completed in 1971. The Authority was dissolved and re-established under the Velmori Transport Reform Act 1972, which gave it its present legal form as a body corporate with operational and financial independence.

Two further metro stations were added to the Quay Line in 1989, and the Pelagic Line ferry service was integrated into the Authority in 1998 after two decades as a private operator. The most recent extension was the Lighthouse Reach tunnel in 2012, which added Reeftown Bridge and Reeftown Beach to the Tide Line tram.

Today the VTA is the largest single employer in the city of Velkara after the harbour authority. We are funded by a combination of fare revenue (62%), a hypothecated payroll levy (28%), and a small central government grant (10%).

Governance

How we are run

The VTA is overseen by a Board of nine directors, appointed by the Ministry of Transport for staggered five-year terms. The Board appoints the General Manager, who is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the network.

We publish an annual operating plan, a five-year capital programme, and quarterly performance reports. All of these are available on the VTA Open Data portal.

Accessibility

For everyone travelling on the VTA

The Velkara Transit Authority is committed to making the network usable by every person in Velkara. All 33 stations and piers are step-free from street to platform, every vehicle has audio and visual next-stop announcements, and our staff are trained to assist.

Step-free access

All stations and piers have step-free routes from the street to the platform. Lifts are available at all underground metro stations. The Ferry Pier interchange has a separate accessible gangway for boarding the Pelagic ferries.

Audio & visual information

Every station has tactile platform edges and high-contrast signage. Trams and ferries announce the next stop both audibly and on internal display screens. Real-time displays at all interchange stations show departures in 80mm characters.

Companion cards

Verified B-card holders travel free on the VTA network. A companion accompanying a B-card holder also travels free. Cards are issued by the Velmori Disability Council, not by the VTA.

Service animals

Service animals travel on all VTA services at all times, including on board ferries and trams. The animal should be clearly identified as a service animal, either by harness or by an identity card.

Accessible timetables

All VTA timetables are available in large-print and audio formats. The VTA mobile app supports dynamic type, dark mode, and VoiceOver / TalkBack screen-reader integration.
