The city

Virelda

Settled twelve centuries ago on a crescent of volcanic glass beaches, Virelda grew from a harbour of glassblowers and fishers into the civic heart of the Emberglass Archipelago. The outer isles of Sola, Mereth, and Kael remain linked to the capital by ferry and cliff tram.

Warm maritime climate with mild winters, soft trade winds, and amber sunsets coloured by fine volcanic glass dust in the upper air.

Locals call the evening light lume d’ambre — amber light — when volcanic glass dust turns the sky the colour of cooled forge work.

Vireldi is the everyday language of the islands. English appears beside it on all ETA wayfinding. On every platform board you will see both: Plaça Kora / Kora Square, Ascens de Verre / Glass Ascent, and so on.

The authority

How we speak

We write plainly. We publish delays before rumours do. We print both languages because islanders and visitors share the same platforms. Our mark — an ember shard over a harbour arc — stands for glass, tide, and the climb inland.

In 1964 the Commonwealth folded the old tram company, the municipal metro dig, and the Isle Ring ferries into one public authority. The Glass Ascent funicular joined in 1978, cutting the cliff walk from Port Ember to Alta Roca from forty minutes to thirteen.

Headquarters remain at 14 Plaça Kora, Port Ember — a limestone building with a teal copper canopy facing the ferry basin.

Accessibility

All metro stations except Far del Nord / North Lighthouse are step-free from street to train. Far del Nord has stairs only on the northbound platform; southbound is level.

Tram T3 and funicular A5 are fully step-free. Ferry V4 has level boarding at Port Ember, Port de Sola, and Moll de Mereth; Desembarc de Kael uses a stepped quay — ask the crew for the portable ramp before casting off.

Priority seating is marked in amber. Audio announcements are in Vireldi first, then English. Large-print network maps are free at the Plaça Kora desk.
