Accessibility
14 of our 20 stations and piers are step-free from the street to the vehicle. Where we cannot yet build a lift or a pontoon, there is a person whose job is to help you travel, at every hour we run.
Turn up and go
No booking is needed anywhere on the network. Every station and pier is staffed from first to last service, and staff can be called from any amber help point.
Free companion
Holders of a Veikart Access card travel with one companion free at all times, and free themselves after 09:30 on weekdays and all day at weekends.
If it goes wrong
If a lift fails or a pier cannot be used, we pay for an accessible taxi to the nearest step-free station, arranged by staff on the spot. No forms.
Step-free access
Step-free means a lift, ramp or level route from the street to the platform or pontoon, and level boarding onto the vehicle.

- Selsta OstOld Town HarbourM1F1F2
Medieval street level is 11 m above the platforms and the Old Town conservation rules do not allow a lift shaft. Staff assistance with the platform stairlift is available at all times; the pier below is step-free from 12 October 2026. Nearest step-free stations: Nevtor (one stop north) and Korhal (one stop south).
- AeltorBridge GateM2
The station sits inside the arch of the old Bridge Gate. A lift is under design as part of the gate restoration, planned for 2028. Nearest step-free stations: Brunsta and Korhal, one stop either side.
- Kelvet FennKelvet MeadowK1
A request halt on the funicular with 14 steps from the meadow path. Passengers who cannot use the steps can stay on the car to Tirkel or Kelvet Veth, both of which have level boarding at the car doors.
- TirkelTower HillK1
Level boarding from the car, but the terrace and signal tower above the station are reached by a 19th-century stair of 46 steps. A viewing platform at station level has the same outlook.
- IssvethSand ShoreF2
A floating pontoon with a gangway whose gradient varies with the tide; at low water it exceeds 1 in 8 for about 40 minutes. Crew assist wheelchair users on request and will hold the boat.
- TirvethTower ShoreF2
A stone harbour with a fixed stair to the pontoon. A replacement floating pier with a level gangway is funded for 2027. Until then, crew assist with a portable ramp at all but the lowest spring tides.
Live lift and pier status is shown on the departure boards and reported on the service updates page. Select any station on the network map to see its step-free status alongside its lines and departures.
By mode
MetroM1M2
- Level boarding at every platform: the gap is under 50 mm horizontally and 20 mm vertically.
- Two wheelchair spaces and a priority seating bay in every car, marked in amber.
- Doors announce opening and closing with a tone and a light; the next station is announced in Marrenic and English and shown on screens.
- Tactile edge strips on all platforms, and tactile route markers from the street to the platform at every step-free station.
- Induction loops at every ticket office and help point.
FerriesF1F2
- Level boarding through the wide midships doors at Dunmar Veth, Selsta Ost (from 12 October), Nevost, Rinveth, Kelvet Veth and Suliss Ost.
- The main saloon of every vessel is on one level with an accessible toilet. Rin-class catamarans have four wheelchair spaces; Tir-class ferries have six and a lift to the open deck.
- Crew are trained in boarding assistance and will always hold a departure for a passenger who needs it.
- Sailings are cancelled in winds above force 7 rather than boarded in unsafe conditions; the boards, this site and the phone line say so as early as we know.
FunicularK1
- Level boarding at the top and bottom stations; the cars are stepped inside to follow the slope, with a level wheelchair bay by the lower door.
- The meadow halt has steps only; see the station notes below.
- Cars stop for 45 seconds at the termini, longer on request.
Veikart Access
A free smartcard for disabled passengers and those who find travel difficult. It gives the concession month pass price, free travel with a companion, and a discreet way to ask for help: tapping it at any help point or reader tells staff you may need assistance.
Apply at the Nevost Quay travel centre with proof of address and any one of: a disability benefit letter, a registered blind or partially sighted certificate, a Blue Badge, or a letter from a doctor. Cards are issued the same day.
Other help

- Large-print and Braille timetables for every line, free from the travel centre or by post.
- Textphone 01 440 6299 and email access@veikavan.ilm for anything on this page.
How this site is built
We want the website to be as usable as the network. It is built to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA and we test it with keyboard-only navigation, screen readers (VoiceOver, NVDA) and at 400 % zoom.
- Keyboard. Everything, including the interactive map, the fare calculator and the departure board's station chooser, works with Tab, Enter, Space and the arrow keys. A skip link is the first item on every page.
- Screen readers. The animated departure board has a text equivalent that updates in step with it. The map exposes every station as a button with its lines and zone. Station names are marked up with their language so they are pronounced correctly.
- Motion. If your device asks for reduced motion, the hero, the board and the printed ticket stop animating.
- Contrast and text. Colours meet 4.5:1; line colours are always paired with the line's letter and number, never used alone. Text resizes without loss; nothing is fixed to pixels.
- Printing. Timetables and tickets have print layouts designed for A4 in black and white.
