Accessibility

The network is for everyone who lives on or visits the islands. 27 of 30 stations and quays are step-free, every tram and train has level boarding, and a member of staff will travel with you if you ask. Here is exactly what to expect.

Not step-free right now

  • M2
    Tirrhyr · Wood Hill

No lift. Step-free access planned for 2027.

  • M1
    Sammerhal · Assembly Hall

Lift installation in progress until 21 November 2026. Escalators in service.

  • F1
    Iskspir · Light Point

Gangway is steep at low water. Crew will assist on request.

Book assistance

Ring 019 440 1934 (every day, 06:00–23:00) by 18:00 the day before you travel. Tell us where you are starting, where you are going and roughly when. We will meet you at the entrance, help you to the platform or the quay and, if you like, travel with you to the other end.

You can also turn up without booking at any staffed station: Ordra Stanne (Central Station), Skaelhal (Ferry Hall), Svethlann (Airport).

When a lift is out of order

Lift faults are shown on the departure boards and on service updates within fifteen minutes. If a lift you need has failed, ask any member of staff or ring 1934: we will book you a free taxi to the nearest step-free station, or to your destination if that is quicker. No forms, no receipts to keep.

Step-free access, station by station

Step-free means you can get from the street to the platform or the boat, and on board, without using a step. Every station listed as step-free has a lift, a ramp or is at street level, and its facilities are listed in full on the network map.

On board

M1 M2 Metro

  • Level boarding at every station; the gap between train and platform is no more than 50 mm.
  • Two wheelchair spaces in every train, in the second and fifth car, marked on the platform floor.
  • Priority seats by every door. Ask, and people move; it is the custom here.
  • Next-station announcements in Ondrish and English, with matching text on the in-car displays.
  • Lifts at every step-free station have braille and raised numerals, and announce the level.

T1 Tram

  • Low-floor trams with level boarding at every stop on the line.
  • A driver-operated ramp at the second door if you need more room to turn.
  • One wheelchair space and two pram spaces per tram; stop request buttons at seated height.
  • Stops announced and displayed; the tram waits for the doors to clear before moving.

F1 F2 Ferries

  • Ramped boarding at every quay except Iskspir, where the gangway is steep at low water and the crew will help.
  • Harbour ferries have a single level deck with wheelchair spaces beside the windows.
  • Archipelago ferries have a lift between the car-free deck and the saloon, and an accessible toilet.
  • Crew are trained to assist with boarding, and will always wait for you.

Everywhere on the network

  • Assistance dogs are welcome on every vehicle and in every station, and travel free.
  • Mobility scooters up to 1,200 mm long and 700 mm wide are carried on all modes without a permit.
  • Prams, pushchairs and wheelchairs board first. Bicycles wait.
  • Every station has at least one seat within sight of the departure board, and toilets at the stations marked on the map are accessible.
  • Staff wear a blue armband with the authority's mark. Anyone wearing one will help.

Seeing and hearing

  • Departure boards use large, high-contrast amber type on a dark background, and repeat the next three departures in speech when you press the button beneath them.
  • Tactile paving marks platform edges, stairs and the route from the entrance to the platform at every station.
  • Hearing loops at every ticket office window and on every ferry's information desk.
  • Large-print and braille timetables for each line are free from any ticket office, and the timetables on this site work with screen readers and print at any size.
  • Announcements are made twice, once in each language, and are shown as text at the same time.

Fares

Holders of the Tolvaren Access Card travel free on all lines with one companion. Senior and student season passes are listed on the fares page. Nobody is ever asked to pay a penalty fare because a machine or a lift was out of order.

This website

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, and we test against them each time the site changes. In particular:

  • Everything works with a keyboard, including the network map, the fare calculator and the enquiry form, and the focused element is always clearly marked.
  • The live departure board is drawn on a canvas. The same departures are provided as text for screen readers beneath it, and every departure is in the timetables.
  • Animation is reduced or removed when your device asks for reduced motion.
  • Text can be resized to 200 per cent, and the pages reflow on small screens without horizontal scrolling.
  • Station names are marked up in their language so screen readers pronounce them as well as they can.

If something on this site does not work for you, tell us at access@tta.tol or through the enquiry form. We reply within three working days and we fix what we can within a month. This statement was last reviewed on 1 September 2026.
